What is Making Tax Digital?

Making Tax Digital (MTD) is HMRC’s move towards a fully digital tax system.

For Income Tax, this means:

  • Keeping your records digitally
  • Submitting updates to HMRC every quarter
  • Completing a final year-end submission

It replaces the traditional once-a-year tax return process for those affected.

Who is affected?

You may need to follow MTD for Income Tax if you have:

  • Self-employment income
  • Property (rental) income

And your total income (before expenses) from these sources is:

  • Over £50,000 from April 2026
  • Over £30,000 from April 2027

If you’re close to these thresholds, it’s worth preparing early.

Not sure if this applies to you?
Send us a message and we can help you find out.

What changes in practice?

Instead of submitting one tax return per year, you will:

  • Send 4 updates to HMRC during the year  (in August, November, February and May)
  • Submit a final year-end declaration

This doesn’t mean paying tax four times a year.

But it does mean your records need to be accurate and up to date throughout the year.

Where most people are now

Most people we speak to are currently:

  • catching up on bookkeeping once a year
  • using spreadsheets or paper
  • unsure what MTD actually means for them

That’s completely normal. But MTD makes that approach harder to maintain.

What this means for you

You don’t need to panic.

But you do need to be set up properly.

With the right systems and support, this can be straightforward and manageable.

How Battle Financial can help

We work with small businesses to:

  • Set up simple, HMRC approved systems
  • Keep records organised throughout the year
  • Stay compliant without unnecessary stress

Clear, practical support. No jargon.

In reality, this usually means:

  • You don’t need to figure it all out yourself
  • You don’t need complicated systems
  • But you do need to get ahead of it

Not sure where to start?

I can take a look at your situation and explain exactly what this means for you.

No pressure. Just clarity.
